FROM THE FOOT OF MOUNT MERU TO THE CRATER’S EDGE

The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formed about  2 to 3 million years ago after a massive volcanic eruption, the crater is around 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and about 20 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter, making it the largest intact caldera in the world. The crater hosts a dense population of wildlife, including the The Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), and supports around 25,000 large animals year-round. It's also home to the endangered black rhino and large numbers of flamingos at Lake Magadi, a soda lake within the crater. The area is also significant for its connection to human history, with nearby sites like Olduvai Gorge, where some of the earliest human remains have been found.Ngorongoro is a top safari destination due to its stunning scenery, diverse ecosystems, and abundant wildlife.

Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater

The best time to visit depends on your preferences for weather, wildlife, and crowds: Ngorongoro Crater offers world-class wildlife viewing year-round, but the experience varies significantly by season.

  • Dry Season (June–October): Ideal for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. Clear skies and mild temperatures enhance the experience.

  • Wet Season (November–May): Lush landscapes and fewer tourists, with migratory birds and newborn animals. However, rain may affect road conditions.

Pro Tip: Booking a multi-day safari tour is cheaper than a standalone trip.
